Name and Purpose
- Steal the Beacon is a classic strategy and reaction game that builds focus, spatial awareness, and teamwork.
- Players practise reading the moment, making quick decisions, and supporting teammates.
a.k.a.
- Centre Object, Bacon Tag, Neutral Zone Grab
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players (even teams) | 15-25 minutes | Open flat field or gym, at least 20m x 10m
Materials
- 1 central object: soft ball, foam disc, small cone, or similar (the “Beacon”)
- 4 cones for team lines and boundary markers
- Optional: sand or soft grass surface for the buried-object variation
- Whistle for signals
Quick-Run Card
- Divide into two equal teams facing each other across the field. Number each team 1 to N.
- Place the Beacon in the exact centre.
- Leader calls one, two, or three numbers. Those players enter the field.
- The player who picks up the Beacon must carry it back across their own team line without being tagged by the opposing player.
- If tagged while holding the Beacon, the point goes to the tagger’s team. If successful, the carrier’s team scores.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark two team lines with cones, 20m apart, and a centre point for the Beacon
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 whistles = end of round, return to lines
- Check the field for uneven ground or wet patches
- Remind players that tagging is a shoulder touch only; no grabbing
How to Play
- Divide players into two even teams. Each player on each team receives a number (both teams have a number 1, number 2, etc.).
- Teams stand on their respective lines, facing the centre.
- Place the Beacon in the exact middle of the field.
- The leader calls one number (or two or three for a multi-player round). Those players jog into the centre zone.
- Players may circle the Beacon, feint, or wait. The player who picks up the Beacon must carry it back to their own line without being tagged by an opponent.
- If the carrier is tagged (gentle shoulder touch) while holding the Beacon, the point goes to the tagger’s team. The carrier is not eliminated; they return to their line.
- If the carrier reaches their line untagged, their team scores a point.
- Reset the Beacon and call the next number.
Variations
- Multi-number rounds: call two or three numbers for bigger, chaotic groups; extra players act as blockers or decoys
- Buried Beacon: on sand or grass, the leader buries a small object while players face away; players must find and carry it back
- Carry-back rule: players may not run with the Beacon; they must walk quickly, adding a tactical layer
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Enter the field as a carrier or tagger on your number
- S (Support): Cheer from your team line; suggest tactics to teammates waiting to be called
- Q (Quiet): Participate at a walking pace when your number is called; equally valid
- O (Observer): Track team scores from the sideline; share total points at debrief
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to enter the field may serve as team strategists on the line, helping teammates with timing advice
- The Beacon object can be made larger or brighter for players with visual differences
Stewardship Moment
- Use a reusable object as the Beacon; avoid single-use items
- After play, collect all cones and the Beacon; do a 60-second field sweep
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves entering a shared space and carrying an object back to your line while others try to tag you. For those not comfortable with being a tag target, the team strategist role on the line is another great option.”
- Mid-game check: After 4-5 rounds, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is the energy?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may raise both hands and step to the sideline. Rejoin at the start of the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players grabbing clothing or pushing: remind all players before starting that tags are gentle shoulder touches only; staff model this in the first round
- Two players standing still, neither wanting to pick up the Beacon: set a 20-second pick-up timer per round to keep energy moving
- Imbalanced teams if numbers are called unevenly: rotate number assignments each round
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Mirror Feint”: pairs face each other and mirror movements for 30 seconds; builds the feinting skill used in the game
- “Object Pick-Up Race”: players jog to a cone and back to their line; warms up the carry-and-run motion
Debrief Questions
- What? “What strategy did you use when you went into the centre? What happened when more numbers were called?”
- So What? “How did having teammates watching from the line change what you did?”
- Now What? “When do you use patience and timing in your day instead of just going for it right away?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect Beacon object and all cones
- Sweep field for dropped items
- Store equipment
