Name and Purpose
- Keeper of the Bone is a quiet, suspenseful circle game that builds observation, stillness, and community.
- Players practise patience, focus, and friendly deception in a low-energy, inclusive setting.
a.k.a.
- Who Took the Bone?; Sleeping Dog (note: original rhyme retained with minor adjustment)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-20 players | 10-20 minutes | Indoors; circle seating or cabin setting
Materials
- 1 small object as the “bone”: a block, a smooth stone, a stuffed toy, or a small ball
- Seats arranged in a circle or arc
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle. One player volunteers to be the Keeper and sits in the centre with eyes closed and the bone under their seat.
- Counsellor silently points to one player who creeps forward and takes the bone back to their seat.
- All players put their hands behind their backs. Everyone recites the group rhyme.
- The Keeper opens their eyes and has 3 guesses to find who has the bone.
- If correct, the taker becomes the next Keeper. If not, the Keeper picks who goes next.
Setup and Boundaries
- Arrange seats in a clear circle with the centre seat visible to all
- Signal: counsellor raises a hand = quiet and still
- Keep the object small enough to hide in two hands
How to Play
- One player volunteers (or is chosen by the current Keeper) to be the Keeper. They sit in the centre chair with eyes closed.
- The counsellor silently points to one seated player. That player creeps quietly to the centre, takes the bone from under the chair, and returns to their seat.
- All players place their hands behind their backs (whether they have the bone or not).
- Everyone recites together: “Keeper, Keeper, where’s your bone? Somebody took it from your home.”
- The Keeper opens their eyes, looks around the circle, and makes up to 3 guesses.
- If correct: the player who took the bone becomes the next Keeper. If not: the Keeper selects someone to be the next Keeper, or the counsellor rotates to ensure everyone gets a turn.
- The game continues until everyone who wants a turn has had one.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take a turn as the Keeper or as the bone-taker
- S (Support): Lead the group in the rhyme; keep track of whose turn it is
- Q (Quiet): Sit in the circle and recite the rhyme without taking a turn as Keeper or taker
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle; join when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- The bone-taker role is silent and movement-based; players with speech differences can fully participate
- Players with limited mobility can pass the bone by sliding it along the floor or passing it to a neighbour who carries it
- Keeper’s guesses can be pointed rather than spoken for players who prefer non-verbal communication
Stewardship Moment
- The “bone” object is reused every session; choose something durable and camp-appropriate
- Reflection: “What made you notice who had the bone? What clues did you pick up on?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game, one player closes their eyes while someone takes an object. For those not comfortable being in the centre hot seat, you can help lead the rhyme or keep score instead.”
- Mid-game check: After 2-3 rounds, check in: “For those not comfortable with any element, an observer or helper role is another option. Does anyone want to switch roles?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step out of the circle at any time and rejoin at the start of the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feeling put on the spot as Keeper: remind everyone this is a guessing game with no wrong answer; 3 guesses is generous
- Sneaky movement causing tripping: remind takers to move slowly and quietly, not rush
- Repetition fatigue in a large group: set a time limit and rotate quickly; use a 30-second Keeper timer
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Statue Sneak”: one player turns their back; others move slowly toward them; the watcher turns around and everyone freezes
- “Sound Map”: players close their eyes for 30 seconds and list every sound they hear; builds the listening skills used in this game
Debrief Questions
- What? “How did you decide who to guess? What gave them away?”
- So What? “What does it feel like to be watched closely by a group? What helped you stay calm?”
- Now What? “When in daily life do you have to stay still and patient while waiting for a clue?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return the bone object to its storage spot
- Reset seating to original arrangement if needed
