Name and Purpose
- Quiet Seeker builds focused listening, body awareness, and group stillness in a calm, engaging challenge.
- Players practise moving with intention and control while developing trust in their senses.
a.k.a.
- Sneaky Seeker, Soft Step Circle
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-25 players | 15-25 minutes | Outdoor clearing or indoor open space; medium circle formation
Materials
- One soft blindfold (cloth or fabric; comfortable to wear)
- One small soft object (beanbag, folded cloth, or foam ball) to place in the centre
- Optional: boundary cones to mark the circle edge
Quick-Run Card
- Group stands in a circle. One volunteer Seeker wears a blindfold in the centre.
- Place a soft object at the Seeker’s feet.
- Staff quietly point to one player to sneak toward the centre.
- Seeker points toward any sound they hear. If the Sneaker is pointed at, they return to the circle.
- A new Sneaker is chosen. The Seeker role rotates regularly.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark or agree on the circle boundary before play
- Signal: staff tap their own shoulder = new Sneaker chosen; staff raise a hand = pause the game
- Check the ground for sticks, rocks, or uneven patches before play
- Remind Sneakers to move smoothly, not to rush and risk a fall
How to Play
- Group stands in a circle. One volunteer becomes the Seeker and stands in the centre with a blindfold on and a soft object placed at their feet.
- The group is silent throughout. Staff signal (quiet tap on the shoulder) to one player at the edge to begin sneaking toward the centre.
- The Sneaker moves as quietly as possible toward the soft object. The goal is to pick it up without being heard.
- The Seeker listens and points in any direction they hear sound. If the Seeker points directly at the Sneaker (within arm’s width), the Sneaker returns to the circle and a new Sneaker is chosen.
- If the Sneaker picks up the object without being pointed at, they swap roles with the Seeker for the next round.
- Staff may signal two players to sneak at once to raise the challenge level.
- The Seeker role rotates after each successful pickup or every 2-3 attempts.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take a turn as the Seeker or Sneaker in the centre
- S (Support): Hold the circle steady, model silence, and quietly signal encouragement
- Q (Quiet): Stay in the circle and practise deep stillness, focusing on what you hear
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle; count how many steps the Sneaker takes; join a round when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to wear a blindfold may close their eyes and keep their head down as an alternative
- Players with hearing sensitivities who find sustained silence uncomfortable can participate as Sneakers only
Stewardship Moment
- After play, return the soft object and any cones to the kit
- Reflection: “What did you notice about the environment when you were really listening?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves wearing a blindfold in the centre of the group. For those not comfortable with that, closing your eyes with your head down is another option, and sneaking or staying in the circle are equally valid roles.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How is everyone doing?”
- Opt-out / re-entry: Any player can step out of the circle to observe at any time. Return to the circle edge whenever ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Sneaker trips while moving silently: check and clear the ground before play; remind players to move slowly and smoothly
- Blindfolded Seeker disorientation: the soft object is placed at their feet as a grounding anchor; staff stay within arm’s reach of the Seeker
- Group cannot maintain silence: staff model quiet first; if the group struggles, try a 30-second “silence warm-up” before the round begins
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Sound Map”: players close their eyes for 60 seconds and mentally map every sound they can hear, then share
- “Soft Steps”: players walk in a large circle, gradually making their footsteps quieter with each lap
Debrief Questions
- What? “What sounds did you notice that you normally tune out?”
- So What? “How did it feel to be responsible for staying completely quiet?”
- Now What? “When in your day do you need to use focused listening?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect the soft object, blindfold, and any cones
- Staff do a quick ground check for any items left behind
