Name and Purpose
- Hot Dog Dash mixes parachute teamwork with silly movement challenges.
- Players practise listening, quick thinking, and creative movement in a fun group setting.
a.k.a.
- Condiment Run, Parachute Categories
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 7-12 | 10-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Large flat open space, indoors or outdoors
Materials
- One large parachute
Quick-Run Card
- Assign everyone a food name: hot dog, relish, or mustard.
- Players hold the parachute in a circle.
- Staff call one food name. That group runs around the outside of the parachute.
- Staff call ‘Mushroom!’ Players lift the parachute to fill it with air.
- Staff call an action (hop, spin, crawl). Runners duck under and return to their spot doing that action.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear the play area and mark the outside running path if needed with cones.
- Signal: one short whistle to pause; two to stop.
- Staff stand outside the circle to watch runners and call actions.
How to Play
- Assign each player a food name: hot dog, relish, or mustard. Large groups can add a fourth name.
- All players stand in a circle holding the parachute edge.
- Staff call one food name. Those players let go and run around the outside of the circle.
- Staff call ‘Mushroom!’ Remaining players lift the parachute to fill it with air.
- Staff call a fun action (hop, spin, wave arms, walk like a crab). Runners duck under the parachute and return to their spots doing that action.
- Parachute comes down once runners are back in place. Repeat with a different food name.
- Occasionally call all three names at once for a big group run.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Run around the outside and do the action under the parachute.
- S (Support): Hold and lift the parachute to create the mushroom.
- Q (Quiet): Hold the edge and lift gently; choose a walk-speed action when running.
- O (Observer): Watch and call out encouragement; suggest the next action to staff.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Runners can walk or roll rather than run. All speeds are welcome.
- Staff can whisper an action to a player who needs a heads-up before it is called.
Stewardship Moment
- Fold the parachute together at the end.
- Reflection: ‘What happens to the mushroom if even one person lets go at the wrong moment?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game involves running around the parachute and ducking underneath it. For those not comfortable running or going under, holding and lifting is just as fun and important.’
- Mid-game check: After two or three rounds, pause and ask for a thumbs up, sideways, or down.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can stay as a holder instead of running. Holders can choose to run on a later round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Runners colliding around the circle: remind runners to go in the same direction and leave space.
- Parachute coming down before runners are back: staff watch runners and delay the signal if needed.
- Tripping while doing actions under the parachute: remind players to watch for others and move at a safe speed.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Name wave: go around the circle, each player lifts their section of the parachute and says their name.
- Mushroom practice: lift and hold the parachute on signal two or three times before play begins.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘Which action under the parachute was hardest? Which was most fun?’
- So What? ‘What helped you get back to your spot in time?’
- Now What? ‘When do you need to listen carefully and move quickly at the same time?’
Cleanup and Reset
- Fold parachute together as a group.
- Check play space for hazards.
- Return parachute to storage.
