Name and Purpose
- Back-to-Back Balance Challenge builds core stability, awareness of your own body, and playful partnership.
- Players practise balance, controlled effort, and reading a partner’s movement without using hands.
a.k.a.
- Bump Balance, Back Bump
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 2-30 players in pairs | 5-10 minutes | Flat open space, clear of obstacles
Materials
- Flat, even ground
- Optional: soft grass or gym mats for added comfort
Quick-Run Card
- Find a partner of similar size.
- Stand back-to-back, feet shoulder-width apart.
- On the go signal, push gently using your lower back only. No elbows, no spinning.
- First to step or lose balance shifts to cheer role for that round.
- Rotate partners and repeat.
Setup and Boundaries
- Clear a flat area of any trip hazards, wet patches, or loose gear
- Mark a loose boundary so pairs stay spread out and don’t bump into each other
- Signal: one short whistle = pause; two whistles = stop and gather
- Staff should be aware of any campers with back or joint concerns and can offer the seated push-hands variation
How to Play
- Pair up with someone of a similar size and stand back-to-back.
- Feet are shoulder-width apart, arms at your sides.
- On the go signal, push gently using your lower back. Elbows stay in; no spinning or grabbing.
- The first player to take a step, lose balance, or sit down shifts to the cheer role for that round.
- The cheer-role player cheers for a neighbouring pair until the round ends.
- After each round, rotate partners so everyone meets someone new.

Inclusion Adaptations
- Seated variation: two players sit back-to-back on a mat and push with their upper backs, hands on knees
- Push-hands variation: pairs face each other, palms touching, and try to unbalance each other with light pushes instead
Stewardship Moment
- Check the play area for any hazards before and after play.
- Reflection: “How did using less force sometimes help more than using more? What does that remind you of?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves gentle back-to-back contact with a partner. For those not comfortable with back contact, a push-hands variation facing each other is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After the first rotation, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. Good to keep going?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step to the side any time. Rejoin the next rotation by raising a hand.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players pushing too hard and causing falls: emphasise “controlled effort” in the pre-brief; staff demonstrate at half-pace first
- Pairs of very different sizes creating imbalance: guide similar-size pairings in the first round
- Back strain from bent posture: remind players to stand tall and push from the lower back, not by bending forward
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Wall sit for 15 seconds to activate legs and core
- Partner mirroring: face a partner and copy their slow movements for 30 seconds
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you notice about how you adjusted when your partner pushed?”
- So What? “What made the difference between staying balanced and stepping out?”
- Now What? “Where in your life do you need to find balance when someone is pushing back?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return mats if used
- Check the area for any hazards before clearing the space
