a.k.a.
- Lateral Thinking Puzzle, Yes/No Mystery
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 5-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space where the group can sit together
Materials
- No materials required
- Optional: printed clue card for the facilitator
Quick-Run Card
- Seat the group in a circle.
- Read the clue aloud: “A person is found in an empty, locked room with a puddle on the floor. What happened?”
- The group asks only yes or no questions.
- Staff answers yes, no, or “not relevant.”
- When solved, celebrate and debrief.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seat the group comfortably
- Signal: raised hand = pause and listen
- No physical setup needed
How to Play
- Facilitator reads the clue clearly and slowly.
- Players ask yes or no questions in turn.
- Facilitator answers: yes, no, or “not relevant.”
- Offer a hint if the group is stuck for more than two or three minutes.
- Confirm the correct answer warmly and move to debrief.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Ask questions and propose solutions aloud
- S (Support): Help track confirmed and ruled-out clues for the group
- Q (Quiet): Think along silently and signal agreement with a nod
- O (Observer): Watch the process; join in when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players may whisper their question to a neighbour who voices it for them
- Facilitator can allow written questions passed forward
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup
- Reflection: “How did your questioning strategy change as you learned more?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This puzzle involves a scenario in a locked room. If the content feels heavy, you are welcome to listen quietly or step out. No pressure either way.”
- Mid-game check: Scan the group after a few minutes; invite anyone disengaged to join or observe.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players may step back at any time and return when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Someone guesses the answer immediately (lucky guess): affirm the thinking and still run the debrief
- Group becomes competitive over who gets the answer: remind them it is a team puzzle, not a race
- Puzzle is too difficult for the group: have hints pre-prepared
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Two Truths and a Lie” to warm up reasoning skills
- “Word Association Chain”: go around the circle with each person saying a word connected to the last
Debrief Questions
- What? “What question turned out to be the most useful? Why?”
- So What? “What does this puzzle tell us about the power of asking the right question?”
- Now What? “Can you think of a real situation where you had to think creatively to solve a problem?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup required
- Collect and store printed clue cards if used
