Name and Purpose
- Pass the Beat builds focus, timing, and shared attention.
- Players tune in to a shared rhythm, practise impulse control, and have a lot of fun with near-misses.
a.k.a.
- Keeper of the Beat, Hand-Pass Rhythm Game
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 5-15 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space with enough room to stand in a circle
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Stand in a circle facing the leader.
- Leader sweeps both hands back and forth slowly so everyone can see.
- Everyone claps exactly when the two hands pass each other.
- If the leader stops before the hands meet, no clap is needed.
- Play for focus and fun. Anyone who claps at the wrong moment moves to the Second Circle groove spot.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a circle with everyone able to see the leader’s hands clearly
- Signal: two claps from the leader = round starts; raised hand = pause
- No boundaries needed for a stationary circle game
How to Play
- The leader stands in the centre and sweeps both hands back and forth slowly.
- Everyone claps the exact moment the hands pass each other.
- If the leader stops before the hands meet and someone claps, that player moves to the Second Circle groove spot at the side.
- At the Second Circle groove spot, players keep the beat by clapping along from the side and cheer the remaining players.
- Players in the groove spot re-enter after one full round by raising their hand.
- Play continues until one sharp-timing player remains. Celebrate them and swap the leader.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Stand in the circle and try to catch every beat perfectly
- S (Support): Stand in the groove spot, keep the clapping rhythm going, and cheer
- Q (Quiet): Sit in the groove spot and tap the beat on your knee instead of clapping
- O (Observer): Watch from just outside the circle and join in when you feel ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with hearing differences can watch the leader’s hands and tap their leg or stamp a foot instead of clapping
- Players who prefer not to be in the centre circle can start in the groove spot and join the circle when they are ready
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup
- Reflection: “What does it take to stay in sync with a group?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game is about timing and focus. For those not comfortable standing in the main circle, the groove spot on the side is a great place to keep the beat and cheer the group on.”
- Mid-game check: After 3-4 minutes, glance around. Invite anyone looking tense to switch to a groove spot role.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise your hand to step out; raise your hand again to step back in.
Risks and Mitigation
- Players feel embarrassed moving to the groove spot: frame the groove spot as a fun role, not a penalty
- Leader moves too quickly and no one can follow: start slow and speed up only once the group has the rhythm
- Group gets competitive and disputes calls: remind everyone the leader’s call is final, and the point is fun
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Pat the Beat”: everyone pats their legs to a simple rhythm together for 30 seconds
- “Echo Clap”: leader claps a short pattern; group echoes it back
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made it hard to stay on the beat? What helped?”
- So What? “What does it feel like when a group finds a shared rhythm?”
- Now What? “Where else do you have to tune in and move with the people around you?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup required
- No equipment to store
