Name and Purpose
- Name Three builds quick thinking, vocabulary, and category knowledge in a lively circle format.
- A pair of players works together under fun time pressure while the group cheers them on.
a.k.a.
- Category Sprint, Three-Second Challenge
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 6-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space with room for a seated or standing circle
Materials
- 1 passable object (soft ball, beanbag, stuffed animal, or similar)
- Flat, even surface if seated on the floor
Quick-Run Card
- Sit in a circle with a pair of players in the centre.
- The pair closes their eyes while the object is passed around the circle.
- One of the pair calls “Stop.”
- Holder names a category letter and passes the object back around the circle.
- The pair works together to name three things in that category starting with that letter before the object completes the circuit.
Setup and Boundaries
- Form a comfortable circle
- Signal: raised hand from the facilitator = pause the game
- Ensure the object being passed is soft and safe
How to Play
- Two players stand or sit together in the centre and close their eyes.
- The group passes the object around the circle.
- One of the pair calls “Stop” at any time.
- The player holding the object names a category (e.g., foods, animals, places) and a starting letter, then begins passing the object again.
- The pair calls out three things in that category starting with that letter before the object gets back to the starting holder. Either player can call any of the three answers.
- If they name three in time, the pair swaps with two new players from the circle.
- If they do not manage three in time, the pair has one more attempt. After two turns, they choose who takes their spot.
- The group cheers for every attempt, successful or not.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Take a turn as part of the centre pair and race against the object
- S (Support): Keep the passing rhythm steady and cheer for the centre pair
- Q (Quiet): Pass the object gently and observe the pattern without naming categories
- O (Observer): Sit just outside the circle and join in when ready
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players can name two things instead of three if three feels too hard (facilitator sets the number at the start based on the group)
- Players who prefer not to be in the centre can stay in the circle and pass; there is no pressure to take the centre role
Stewardship Moment
- Use a reusable object that lives in your activity kit
- Reflection: “How did it feel to think fast with a partner? What helped?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game a pair works together in the centre. For those not comfortable in the centre, you are very welcome to stay in the circle and pass the object. Both roles are equally important.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, check the energy. Is anyone looking uncomfortable? Offer a role swap.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can opt to stay in the circle at any time. Raise your hand to re-enter the centre pair when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Pair freezes under pressure: have the group count out loud together (“1, 2, 3…”) to make the time pressure feel shared rather than isolating
- Object gets passed too fast and the pair never has a chance: set a steady passing pace before starting
- Category is too hard for a pair: the group can call out a hint; this is encouraged
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Category Popcorn”: call a category and the group shouts words that fit as fast as possible for 30 seconds
- “Alphabet Bounce”: go around the circle saying words in a chosen category in alphabetical order
Debrief Questions
- What? “Which category was the hardest? Which letter tripped you up?”
- So What? “What did it feel like to think fast with a partner instead of alone?”
- Now What? “Where in your daily life do you rely on a partner or team to think quickly?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return the passing object to the activity kit
- No other cleanup needed
