Name and Purpose
- Pass the Number builds focus, rhythm, and working memory in a lively circle format.
- Players tune in to a shared beat while sending and receiving numbered signals.
a.k.a.
- Number Beat, Rhythm Numbers
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 8-30 players | 10-20 minutes | Any indoor or outdoor space with room for a seated circle
Materials
- No materials required
Quick-Run Card
- Sit in a circle. Number off starting at 1.
- Learn the 4-part beat together: pat lap twice, clap hands twice.
- Use this chant to learn the beat: “Are you ready (2 lap pats), Let’s go (2 claps), Yes we’re ready (2 lap pats), Let’s go (2 lap pats).”
- Player 1 starts: says their number twice on the lap pats, another player’s number twice on the claps.
- That player continues the pattern. Anyone off beat moves to the Groove Spot and claps along from the side.
Setup and Boundaries
- Seat the group in a circle close enough to see each other clearly
- Signal: facilitator raises both hands = pause and reset the beat
- No physical boundaries needed
How to Play
- Players sit in a circle and number off starting at 1.
- Learn the beat together: two pats on the lap, then two claps. Practise until the whole group is in sync.
- Use the learning chant: “Are you ready” (2 lap pats), “Let’s go” (2 claps), “Yes we’re ready” (2 lap pats), “Let’s go” (2 lap pats). Repeat until the beat feels natural.
- Player 1 starts the game: on the lap pats they say their number twice (“1, 1”), on the claps they say another player’s number twice (“4, 4”).
- Player 4 must pick up the pattern immediately: “4, 4” on their lap pats, then a new number on their claps.
- If a player is off beat, misses their number, or calls a number that is no longer in the game, they move to the Groove Spot.
- At the Groove Spot, they keep the beat by clapping along and re-enter after two full rounds by raising their hand.
- The game gets faster and more electric as the group shrinks. Celebrate the whole circle’s run, not just the last player standing.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Stay in the circle and keep the beat and the number chain going
- S (Support): At the Groove Spot, keep the beat loud and clear to help the circle stay on rhythm
- Q (Quiet): Tap the beat on your knee instead of full claps if full noise is too much
- O (Observer): Watch and learn the beat before joining the circle
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players with hearing differences can watch others’ hands to follow the beat and tap rather than clap
- Players who find the number-memory aspect challenging can start with a smaller group and shorter sequences
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup
- Reflection: “What happens to the whole group’s rhythm when one person is off beat?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves keeping a beat and calling numbers. For those not comfortable being in the centre circle right away, the Groove Spot on the side is a great place to lock in the rhythm and join the circle when you are ready.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, pause. Check energy and pacing. “How is everyone doing? Do we need a slower start?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Move to the Groove Spot at any time. Raise your hand to re-enter after two rounds.
Risks and Mitigation
- Beat falls apart quickly: slow the pace right down and rebuild the rhythm before adding the number element
- Calling a number that is out: add a rule that players announce eliminated numbers so everyone knows who is still in
- Game moves too fast for newer players: run a practice round at half speed first
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Echo Clap”: facilitator claps a short rhythm and the group echoes it back
- “Lap Pat Race”: whole group pats a lap beat together, speeding up gradually
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest part: keeping the beat or remembering numbers?”
- So What? “What did it take to stay focused when the pressure was on?”
- Now What? “When do you need that kind of focus in your daily life?”
Cleanup and Reset
- No cleanup required
