Name and Purpose
- Red Handed is a circle guessing game where one player tries to catch the marble as it passes secretly between fists.
- Players practise focus, misdirection, and reading subtle cues.
a.k.a.
- Marble Pass
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-20 players | 10-15 minutes | Indoors, standing or seated circle
Materials
- 1 marble or small smooth object (a button, a coin, or a small pebble work well)
Quick-Run Card
- Players stand in a circle, shoulder to shoulder, both fists extended in front.
- One player in the centre closes their eyes while the marble is passed to a starting player.
- Players pass the marble sneakily. Hold one fist palm up, one palm down. Pass from an upward palm to a downward fist beside it.
- The centre player taps the fist they believe holds the marble.
- Correct guess: that player moves to the centre. Wrong guess: passing continues.
Setup and Boundaries
- Players stand in a tight enough circle that all fists are visible to the centre player.
- Signal: staff calls “Freeze” to pause passing when needed.
- Check the floor for any tripping hazards before forming the circle.
How to Play
- Players stand in a circle, shoulder to shoulder, with both fists extended palm-side up and down alternately.
- Staff (or a volunteer) places the marble secretly in one player’s upward palm while the centre player has eyes closed.
- Players begin passing the marble: move it from an upward palm into the downward fist of the player beside them. Everyone moves their hands as if passing, whether or not they have the marble.
- The centre player opens their eyes when ready and watches the fists.
- They tap a fist to guess. If correct, that player moves to the centre and the previous centre player joins the circle.
- If incorrect, passing continues until the centre player is correct or calls three taps total.
- After 3 taps without a correct guess, the marble is revealed and a new centre player volunteers.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Stand in the circle and pass the marble with maximum sneakiness and expression.
- S (Support): Help newer players understand the passing method quietly before the round starts.
- Q (Quiet): Stand in the circle and pass minimally, keeping still and calm to blend in.
- O (Observer): Watch the circle from just outside and try to spot where the marble is without playing.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot comfortably hold their fists extended can sit in the circle and rest their hands in their lap, passing the marble under a small cloth or scarf.
- A larger object (a smooth stone or small beanbag) can replace the marble for players with limited grip.
Stewardship Moment
- One small object, reused indefinitely. Store the marble in a small tin or pouch with the game instructions.
- Reflection: “One tiny marble kept 20 people focused for 15 minutes. Not everything needs to be big.”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game you will be standing close together in a circle and passing a marble between your hands. For those not comfortable with close standing, sitting in the circle with a small gap is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, check if the pace and proximity still feel comfortable for everyone.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can step back from the circle at any time. Rejoin by stepping in between any two players when ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Marble dropped on the floor (tripping or rolling hazard): pause, locate, and return before continuing. Consider a small cloth square under the circle as a catch area.
- Centre player touching hands rather than tapping a fist: clarify that a tap on the back of the fist (not grabbing or pulling open) is the correct action.
- Circle too loose for fair guessing: ensure players stand close enough that the centre player has a clear view of all fists.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Two Hands”: players practise the palm-up / palm-down fist motion for 30 seconds before the marble is introduced.
- Quick mirror game: pairs face each other and mirror slow hand movements for 60 seconds to warm up hand awareness.
Debrief Questions
- What? “What did you do to make the centre player think you had the marble?”
- So What? “What does it take to pay attention to a small detail in a busy situation?”
- Now What? “When do you rely on reading small signals from other people in everyday life?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return marble to pouch or tin.
- No other cleanup required.
