Name and Purpose
- Secret Spy Switch is a team strategy game where players must deduce their teammates’ secret identities and call them across a line.
- Players practise memory, deduction, and working under uncertainty.
a.k.a.
- Four on a Couch (team variant)
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 10-16 | 10-30 players | 20-30 minutes | Indoors, seated on floor or chairs
Materials
- Small name cards or pieces of paper, 1 per player
- Pens or pencils
- A hat, bag, or bowl
- A coin
Quick-Run Card
- Each player writes their name on a card and puts it in the hat.
- Each player draws a card from the hat. That name is their secret identity for the game.
- Split into two equal teams. Each team sits on their designated side of the room.
- Flip a coin. The winning team goes first. A player calls out a name. The person holding that name card crosses to their side and swaps name cards.
- Teams alternate turns. The first team to bring all their original members to their side wins.
Setup and Boundaries
- Designate two clear sides of the room with a visible line or chairs.
- Each player places their name card face down in front of them at the start.
- Signal: a hand raise from staff pauses the game if clarification is needed.
How to Play
- Each player writes their name on a small card and places it in the hat.
- Each player draws a name card at random. This is their secret identity. Do not reveal it.
- Divide into two equal teams. Each team sits together on their side of the room, name cards face down.
- Each player needs to keep track of two things: their own secret identity, and the identities they have observed during play.
- Flip a coin to decide which team goes first.
- A player on the going team calls out any name. The player currently holding that name card crosses to the calling team’s side and swaps name cards with the player who called.
- Teams alternate turns.
- The goal: each team tries to call their original members back to their side. The tricky part is that at the start, no one knows which secret identity their teammates are hiding.
- Information is gathered each time a player crosses the line, since swapping cards reveals partial identity information.
- The first team to have all their original members on their side wins the round.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Track multiple identities, plan strategic calls, and lead your team’s decision-making.
- S (Support): Help your team by quietly keeping a mental tally of which identities have been revealed.
- Q (Quiet): Participate by crossing when called and tracking your own identity chain without taking a leading role.
- O (Observer): Watch the first round without playing to understand the mechanics, then join for round two.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who have difficulty tracking information can keep a small notepad to write down identity changes as they occur.
- The game can be slowed down by allowing teams 30 seconds of quiet discussion before each call.
Stewardship Moment
- Name cards can be reused across sessions. Collect and store in an envelope.
- If paper is used, keep pieces small and reuse the same set across multiple rounds.
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game your name is used as a game piece. No one will be singled out personally. For those who prefer not to have their real name in the game, a nickname or made-up name is completely fine.”
- Mid-game check: After the first round, check if the pace and mechanics make sense for everyone.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can hand their name card to a staff member and observe. They can re-enter by picking up a new card and joining a team for the next round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Confusion about whose identity is whose: allow a brief pause at any time for teams to quietly re-sort their information.
- One team pulling too far ahead: staff can adjust by giving the trailing team a one-call head start in round two.
- Players feeling frustrated by the complexity: start with a smaller group (10 players) for the first run to make mechanics visible.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name Echo”: go around the circle and each player says their name while doing a short physical gesture. The group echoes both.
- Quick team memory game: each team has 60 seconds to memorise every member’s name, then quiz each other.
Debrief Questions
- What? “How did you figure out who on the other team had one of your teammates’ identities?”
- So What? “What made it hard to trust your guess about someone’s secret identity?”
- Now What? “How does uncertainty about what others know affect how you work together as a team?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all name cards and store in envelope.
- Return pens and coin to staff kit.
- 30-second room sweep.
