Name and Purpose
- Snowman Scramble is a fast, energetic indoor game that mixes strategy, coordination, and a little chaos.
- Players practise quick decision-making, spatial awareness, and teamwork in short bursts so everyone gets time to rest and cheer.
a.k.a.
- Snowman Knockout, Snowball Rush
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-25 minutes | Large indoor smooth surface (gym or multipurpose room)
Materials
- 3 rings (diving rings, ringuette rings, or hula hoops laid flat)
- 3 balls of different sizes (large, medium, small . foam or rubber preferred)
- 2 bowling pins or plastic bottles as targets
- Cones or tape for boundary markers
- Optional: scoreboard
Quick-Run Card
- Build the snowman in the room centre: ring, ball, ring, ball, ring, ball.
- Place one pin at each far end of the room.
- Divide into two teams and number players.
- Leader calls one or two numbers. Those players enter the floor . all three balls are in play.
- First to knock the other team’s pin over scores a point. Rebuild the snowman and call new numbers.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark the play area with cones or tape. Keep a clear sideline.
- Signal: one whistle = pause; two whistles = stop, step back
- Check the floor is dry and free of obstacles before play
- Remind players: slide your feet to stop, do not sprint into walls
How to Play
- Build the snowman in the exact centre of the room (ring, then ball, in three layers).
- Each team stands on their side. Number every player.
- Leader calls a number (or two). Those players step onto the floor immediately.
- All three balls fly off the snowman as it gets knocked around. Any ball can be used to knock over the other team’s pin.
- As soon as a pin is knocked over, a point is scored. The round ends. Everyone returns to their side.
- Rebuild the snowman and call the next numbers.
- First team to 10 points wins, or play until all numbers have been called at least once.

Inclusion Adaptations
- Players can roll balls rather than throw them for lower-impact participation
- A seated player can be the official snowman rebuilder and scorekeeper, an active and valued role
Stewardship Moment
- The snowman uses equipment the group already owns. Nothing gets thrown away.
- Reflection: “We just used three rings and three balls to build something and then knock it apart. What else do you make and remake at camp?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game has a fast, loud burst in the middle. For those not comfortable rushing into a scramble, there are sideline roles like scorekeeper and snowman builder that keep the game running.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, check in with the group. Anyone wanting a role switch can ask the leader between rounds.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can swap their number with a willing player or take a sideline role permanently. Rejoin the numbered rotation anytime.
Risks and Mitigation
- Slipping on smooth floor: no socks on slippery surfaces. Shoes required.
- Collision between two players rushing the same ball: remind players to call “got it” when going for a ball
- Ball hitting a bystander: enforce a clear sideline boundary with cones. Sideline players stay seated.
- Eye-level ball trajectory: use soft foam balls where possible
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Dribble and Freeze”: players dribble a single ball around the space; on whistle, freeze
- “Snowball Pass”: the group passes all three balls simultaneously around a circle, no drops
Debrief Questions
- What? “When your number was called, what was the first thing you noticed?”
- So What? “What made it easier or harder to work with your teammate when you had three balls flying around?”
- Now What? “When things get chaotic, what helps you stay focused and make good choices?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect all three balls and return to storage
- Return rings to storage
- Stand pins upright and move to storage
- Check the floor for anything that rolled under bleachers or furniture
