Name and Purpose
- Who’s Missing is a memory and attention game that rewards noticing others.
- Players practise observation, group awareness, and the quiet skill of really seeing who is around them.
a.k.a.
- Spot the Gap, One of Us Is Gone
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-30 players | 5-15 minutes | Indoor or outdoor space; group sits in a circle or loose cluster
Materials
- None required
- Optional: blindfold or sleep mask for the player who steps away, so they don’t see who is guessing
Quick-Run Card
- Group sits in a circle with eyes closed or heads resting down.
- Leader quietly taps one player to step out of sight.
- Leader calls ‘Open!’
- Group looks around and the first player to correctly name who is missing scores a point.
- Missing player returns; rotate and repeat.
Setup and Boundaries
- Choose a comfortable seated spot where players can rest their heads down without strain.
- Signal: ‘Open!’ = eyes up and ready; one clap = pause.
- Ensure the player stepping away has a clear, safe path out of the space and a comfortable place to wait.
How to Play
- The group sits in a circle or cluster with eyes closed or heads resting on folded arms.
- The leader quietly taps one player on the shoulder. That player gently and quietly leaves the circle and waits just out of sight.
- The leader says ‘Open!’ and the group lifts their heads.
- Players look around. The first person to correctly name who is missing scores a point.
- The missing player returns to the group, and a new round begins with a different player stepping away.
- After several rounds, the player with the most points leads the debrief.
I-OPt Options
- Start: A (Active) , engage fully, head down and ready to look up quickly | S (Support) , help make sure the space is quiet and fair for the person stepping away | Q (Quiet) , sit comfortably, no pressure to be the first to answer | O (Observer) , watch the dynamic from a slightly outside position
- Mid: A (Active) , try to be the first to name who is missing | S (Support) , help keep the group quiet while heads are down | Q (Quiet) , take a quiet turn stepping away | O (Observer) , track the scores informally
- Late: A (Active) , volunteer to step away more than once | S (Support) , encourage quieter players to try guessing | Q (Quiet) , enjoy the calm of a heads-down moment | O (Observer) , stay engaged without pressure to guess out loud
- End: A (Active) , lead the debrief | S (Support) , help settle the group for reflection | Q (Quiet) , give a thumbs-up or short word | O (Observer) , listen in
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who prefer not to step away alone can bring a buddy or step just to the edge of the visible space rather than fully out of sight.
- Players with visual differences can participate as the one who steps away, or focus on listening for name guesses.
Stewardship Moment
- No materials means no cleanup needed.
- Reflection: ‘We just practised noticing who is here. What does it mean to a community when people are really seen?’
Consent
- Pre-brief: ‘This game involves having your eyes closed for a short moment while someone quietly leaves the group. For those who’d rather keep their eyes open and look at the floor instead, that works perfectly. No one is expected to step away if they’d prefer not to.’
- Mid-game check: After two or three rounds, check in: ‘How is everyone going? Comfortable with how it’s running?’
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can pass on stepping away. They stay in the circle and can volunteer to step away in a later round.
Risks and Mitigation
- Player stepping away feels isolated: keep the wait brief and ensure they can see or hear the group from where they wait.
- Guessing becomes competitive and noisy: remind the group that quiet, thoughtful answers are just as celebrated as fast ones.
- Group peeks: this is a good-natured game; gentle reminders are enough.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- ‘Name and Gesture’: each player says their name with a matching movement; group mirrors it back.
- ‘Count Around’: group counts to 20 in a circle; anyone can say two consecutive numbers, but no one person can say both.
Debrief Questions
- What? ‘How quickly did you notice who was gone? What helped you figure it out?’
- So What? ‘What does it say about a group when people really notice who is missing?’
- Now What? ‘Is there someone in your life who might need to be noticed a bit more this week?’
Cleanup and Reset
- Nothing to collect.
- Check that the player who stepped away feels welcomed back in before moving on.
