Name and Purpose
- Alphabet Pass Basketball keeps everyone engaged through rhythm, anticipation, and a low-stakes shooting moment.
- Players practise passing accuracy, listening, and turn-taking alongside basic basketball skills.
a.k.a.
- Circle Pass, Hot Potato Basketball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-30 players | 15-20 minutes | Basketball court with at least one hoop
Materials
- 1 basketball (2 for groups of 20+)
- Optional: cones to mark the shooting spot
- Flat, clear floor space
Quick-Run Card
- Players sit in a circle around the key or free-throw area.
- Pass the ball around the circle while the group sings or chants the alphabet together.
- Player holding the ball at “Z” walks to the free-throw line (or a marked closer spot) to shoot.
- Made basket: celebrate and return to the circle. Missed basket: player joins the “All-Stars Sideline” to cheer; re-enters at the next round.
- Continue until everyone has had a turn or time is called.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a clear shooting spot with a cone (adjust distance for age and ability)
- Signal: 1 clap from staff = pause; 2 claps = stop and listen
- Check the floor for wet patches or obstacles before play
How to Play
- Players sit in a large circle around the basket. If sitting on the floor is difficult, chairs or standing are fine.
- One player starts with the ball. The group begins chanting or singing the alphabet together.
- Players pass the ball around the circle to the rhythm of the chant.
- The player holding the ball when the group says “Z” stands up and goes to the shooting spot.
- They take one shot. Staff encourage regardless of outcome.
- Made basket: player returns to their spot in the circle. Missed basket: player moves to the All-Stars Sideline and cheers for the next shooter. They return to the circle after 2 rounds.
- A new round begins with the next player starting the pass.
- Game ends when everyone has had at least one shooting turn, or when time is called.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Pass quickly and enthusiastically; aim for a made basket
- S (Support): Lead the alphabet chant; keep the group in rhythm
- Q (Quiet): Pass gently and take the shot from the closer marked spot
- O (Observer): Track who has shot; call out encouragement from the sideline
Inclusion Adaptations
- Shooting spot can be moved closer to the basket for players who need it, no questions asked
- Players may roll or bounce-pass rather than full-pass if needed
- Seated players can participate fully; standing is not required to pass or chant
Stewardship Moment
- At the end, each player picks up any gear near them before leaving the space
- Reflection: “The alphabet kept us all connected. What else helps a group move together?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “When the alphabet hits Z, whoever has the ball gets a shooting turn. For those not comfortable shooting at the hoop, rolling the ball toward the basket from a closer spot is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a few rounds, check in with a thumbs signal. Adjust the shooting spot if needed.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Players can pass instead of shooting and remain in the circle. They can shoot when they feel ready.
Risks and Mitigation
- Ball dropped during pass causes scramble: remind players to wait for the ball to come to them rather than reaching
- Player feels embarrassed after a missed shot: staff narrate positively (“That’s a tough shot. Great courage for stepping up”)
- Large group slows the alphabet too fast: set a steady, even chant pace before starting
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Name Pass”: call a person’s name before passing; builds awareness and connection
- “Alphabet Sprint”: group chants A-Z as fast as they can together, no ball; sets the rhythm
Debrief Questions
- What? “What happened when the ball landed with you at Z?”
- So What? “How did it feel to shoot with everyone watching? What made it better or harder?”
- Now What? “How do you handle moments when all eyes are on you, in camp or at home?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return basketball to storage
- Remove any cones used for the shooting spot
- Quick check of floor area for dropped items
