Name and Purpose
- Breath Pong is a playful, low-equipment game that builds focus, breath control, and team coordination.
- Players practise sustained effort and communication without using their hands.
a.k.a.
- Blow Pong, No-Hands Pong
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 4-20 players (2-10 per side) | 10-20 minutes | Indoors, standard table or large flat surface
Materials
- 1 ping pong ball (have a spare)
- 1 table approximately 1.5m x 2.5m
- Optional: tape or chalk line across the centre
- Optional: rolled-up towel or thin book as a side rail to reduce side-out restarts
Quick-Run Card
- Teams stand at opposite short ends of the table, hands clasped behind backs.
- Place the ping pong ball in the centre.
- On “Go” signal, teams blow the ball toward the opposite end.
- Ball drops off the far end = 1 point for that team. Ball off the side = restart from centre.
- First team to 5 points wins; rotate players and repeat.
Setup and Boundaries
- Signal: 1 tap on the table = pause; 2 taps = stop and gather
- Check that all players can comfortably reach the table surface from their standing position
- Ensure adequate ventilation in the room; this activity involves sustained breathing effort
- Staff should be aware of any respiratory sensitivities in the group
How to Play
- Divide into two equal teams. Each team stands along one short end of the table.
- Players clasp hands behind their backs for the duration of play. No touching the ball.
- Staff places the ball in the centre of the table and calls “Ready, set, blow!” (or 1 whistle).
- Teams blow the ball toward the opposite end of the table.
- Ball drops off the far end of the table = 1 point for the blowing team.
- Ball drops off the side = no point; restart from centre.
- First team to 5 points wins that round. Rotate players if waiting teams are present.
- Variation: allow players to move sideways along their end of the table.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Blow hard and direct; position yourself to intercept the ball’s path
- S (Support): Call out where the ball is heading; help teammates coordinate
- Q (Quiet): Blow gently and focus on placement over power
- O (Observer): Track the score, watch for out-of-bounds calls, cheer teams on; rotate in next round
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot lean over the table may use a straw to direct air (tape a straw to the edge if needed)
- Table height can be adjusted if available; otherwise, allow a chair for players who need one
- Wider table variation: if the table is very narrow, add a soft rope along each side to reduce out-of-bounds restarts
Stewardship Moment
- Ping pong ball is fully reusable; wipe it down after play and store it safely
- Reflection: “We played a whole game without using our hands and without wasting anything. What did you notice?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves blowing continuously, which takes effort. For those not comfortable with the breathing intensity, taking a shorter blowing turn or calling strategy from the side is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After a round, ask for a thumbs signal. Check in if anyone seems winded.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Step back from the table at any time by raising a hand. Re-enter at the next round start.
Risks and Mitigation
- Dizziness from sustained blowing: keep rounds short (5 points max); staff watch for any player who looks flushed or unsteady
- Players leaning too far over the table: remind teams to stay on their side; leaning over the centre line is not allowed
- Competitive tension when score is close: staff narrate positively and remind teams it is best of 3 rounds
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Feather Float”: each player blows a small piece of tissue or feather across a desk; practises breath control
- “Deep Breath Count”: group takes 3 slow deep breaths together before play starts; sets a calm, focused tone
Debrief Questions
- What? “What surprised you about trying to control the ball without your hands?”
- So What? “How did your team communicate when you couldn’t point or gesture?”
- Now What? “Can you think of a time you had to find a new way to do something when your usual tools weren’t available?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Return ping pong ball(s) to storage
- Remove any tape from the table surface cleanly
- Quick wipe of the table if shared with other activities
