Name and Purpose
- Current Squeeze is a quick-reaction relay that builds group focus and teamwork through a simple hand squeeze chain.
- Players practise listening, trust, and communication without needing to say a word.
a.k.a.
- Hand Squeeze Relay, Electricity, Pulse
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 10-40 players (even numbers work best) | 15-25 minutes | Gym or open field; chairs work for a seated variation
Materials
- 1 coin (quarter or similar) for flipping
- 2 soft objects (beanbags or foam balls), one per team, placed at the end of each line
- Cones to mark team lanes (optional)
- Chairs (optional, for seated variation)
Quick-Run Card
- Two equal teams each stand in a line, side by side, holding hands.
- Teams face the same direction. A soft object sits at the far end of each line.
- Line leaders face the coin flipper, eyes open. Everyone else closes their eyes.
- Coin lands HEADS: line leaders squeeze. The squeeze travels down the chain.
- Last player grabs the object. First to grab it wins the point. Line leaders rotate to end.
Setup and Boundaries
- Two parallel lines, about 2m apart, facing the same direction
- Soft object (beanbag or foam ball) placed clearly at the far end of each team line
- Signal: 1 whistle = pause; 2 whistles = stop and gather
- Staff should be aware of campers who are sensitive to hand-holding or close physical proximity
How to Play
- Divide players into two equal teams. Each team stands side by side in a line.
- Teams line up parallel to each other, facing the same direction.
- Everyone holds hands. A soft object sits at the far end of each line.
- Line leaders (at the start of the line) are the only players with eyes open.
- A staff member flips the coin.
- If the coin lands HEADS: the line leader squeezes the next player’s hand immediately.
- Each player passes the squeeze down the line as soon as they feel it.
- The last player in line grabs the soft object as quickly as possible.
- The team whose last player grabs the object first earns a point.
- If the coin lands TAILS: no squeeze should travel. If it does, the team loses a point.
- After each round, the line leader moves to the end and a new player becomes line leader.
- Play until every player has been line leader once, or until a set score is reached.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as line leader or fast-reaction end player
- S (Support): Hold position in the middle of the chain, focus on fast and accurate squeeze-passing
- Q (Quiet): Participate seated in a chair, holding hands from a comfortable, stable position
- O (Observer): Watch from the side, track the coin flips and point scores, choose when to join
Inclusion Adaptations
- Seated variation: all players sit in chairs in a line; same rules apply
- For players not comfortable with hand-holding, a rope or scarf held between players passes the squeeze instead
- Coin caller role available for players who prefer not to stand in line
Stewardship Moment
- Use a reusable soft object (beanbag or foam ball) rather than a single-use item
- After play: collect all equipment into one bag; do a 60-second sweep of the space
Consent
- Pre-brief: “This game involves holding hands in a chain to pass a squeeze signal. For those not comfortable with hand-holding, a rope or scarf to hold is another option . works just as well.”
- Mid-game check: After the first few rounds, pause and ask for thumbs up, sideways, or down from the group.
- Opt-out/re-entry: Any player can step to the sideline at any time by raising a hand. Rejoin at the start of any new round.
Risks and Mitigation
- False squeeze on TAILS causing scramble: reinforce the penalty rule; remind teams before every round
- Rough hand-grabbing at the end of the line: use a soft object (beanbag), not a hard item; coach gentle grabs
- Eye peeking by non-leaders affecting fairness: normalise trust; reframe peeking as missing the fun of the surprise
Warm-Up Suggestions
- Squeeze Count: standing in a circle, one squeeze travels around the whole group as fast as possible; time it and try to beat the record
- Mirror Hands: pairs face each other and mirror hand movements for 30 seconds without touching
Debrief Questions
- What? “What made the squeeze travel faster or slower down your team’s line?”
- So What? “What does it feel like to rely on the person next to you without being able to see what is happening?”
- Now What? “When else in your day do you have to trust someone and pass along information quickly?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect beanbags or foam balls
- Stack or store chairs if used
- Check space for any equipment left behind
