Name and Purpose
- Arm Soccer flips the usual rules of soccer and challenges players to use their upper body in a whole new way.
- Players build upper-body coordination, creative problem-solving, and team communication.
a.k.a.
- Hand Soccer, No-Feet Soccer, Crawl Ball
Age / Group / Time / Space
- Ages 8-16 | 8-22 players | 15-25 minutes | Large outdoor grass field or gym, min. 20m x 15m
Materials
- Soccer ball or large rubber ball (softer is better for hand play)
- 4-6 cones for field boundaries
- 2 sets of goal markers (cones set 2m apart, or small portable nets)
- Coloured pinnies (optional, for team identification)
Quick-Run Card
- Mark a field with centre line and two goals.
- Teams start in their own half.
- Players advance the ball using only their arms (bat, tap, or roll along the ground). No picking up and running.
- No feet allowed on the ball.
- Score by getting the ball through the opponent’s goal markers. Whistle signals round end.
Setup and Boundaries
- Mark a rectangle with cones (approx. 20m x 15m). Mark a centre line.
- Goals are two cones set 2m apart at each end.
- Signal: 1 short whistle = pause; 2 short whistles = stop and gather.
- Check surface for wet patches, rocks, or holes.
- No picking up the ball and carrying it. Arms only means batting, rolling, and nudging.
How to Play
- Teams start on their own side. One team begins with the ball at centre.
- Players advance the ball by batting, tapping, rolling, or nudging it with their hands and arms only. Feet cannot touch the ball.
- Players may not pick the ball up and run with it. They may cup it briefly to redirect it, then release.
- Opponents try to intercept the ball using their arms.
- No body-to-body contact. If contact occurs, the nearest player gives the ball to the other team.
- Score by getting the ball through the opponent’s goal markers.
- After each goal, restart from centre. Rotate who starts each restart.
- Second Circle: any player who needs a break steps to the sideline and becomes a boundary monitor or cheer guide. They rejoin at the next restart.
I-OPt Options
- A (Active): Play as a forward or defender, move constantly with the ball.
- S (Support): Position near the goal as a keeper or relay-passer, communicate directions.
- Q (Quiet): Hold a mid-field zone, receive and redirect passes at a comfortable pace.
- O (Observer): Watch from the sideline, call out creative moves, rejoin at the next restart.
Inclusion Adaptations
- Players who cannot kneel or move on hands can play from a standing bat-only position and cover a specific zone.
- Use a larger, softer ball for players with grip or coordination challenges.
- Walking-only variation can be applied to the whole game if the group needs a lower-intensity version.
Stewardship Moment
- After play, return the ball and cones to storage and do a 60-second field sweep.
- Reflection: “How did removing your feet change how you worked as a team? What stayed the same?”
Consent
- Pre-brief: “In this game, your feet are off-limits. For those not comfortable with kneeling or ground-level play, a standing zone role is another option.”
- Mid-game check: After 5 minutes, pause. “Thumbs up, sideways, or down. How are you all going?”
- Opt-out/re-entry: Raise a hand to step to the sideline. Rejoin at the next restart.
Risks and Mitigation
- Hands and faces close to the ball: remind players to bat gently and stay aware of others around them.
- Crawling players near standing players: keep all players in the same mode (either all standing or all floor-level).
- Competitive intensity escalating contact: call pause immediately at any body-to-body contact.
Warm-Up Suggestions
- “Hand Dribble Relay”: players dribble a ball using only hands across a short distance and back.
- “Arm Wrestling Relay”: playful arm-strength warm-up in pairs (no competitive winner; stop when both are warmed up).
Debrief Questions
- What? “What was the hardest adjustment when you could not use your feet?”
- So What? “How did your team change its strategy once you figured out the arm-only rule?”
- Now What? “When have you had to figure out a new way to do something you thought you already knew how to do?”
Cleanup and Reset
- Collect ball and all cones.
- 60-second ground sweep.
- Return pinnies to storage if used.
